Women and Girls' Cricket

The Women and Girl’s section of the ECCB are looking forward to a busy 2008 season. After a recent regional fixture setting meeting the U13 side have 10 competitive matches, the u15’s 10 matches and the U17’s 12 matches.

The women's side have 8 matches, 3 of which are to be played at the County Championships Festival.

Each age group also has a three day festival at locations around the country.

The Essex Super Fours Festival 2008

The Under 11 and Under 13 Girls congregated at Wickford Cricket Club on Monday 5 May for the fourth annual Essex Super Fours Festival.

The 32 Girls were split up into 4 teams to play in league based tournament; all teams playing each other.

The level of cricket was excellent all day and all the matches were closely fought. All members of Team C gave a superb bowling performance to come out overall winners (3 wins out of 3 matches). The Under 11's - Chloe, Sarah and Verity deserve a special mention here. The consistency of the other teams was illustrated by the final scores of one win each.

The many highlights of the day included the big hitting Under 13 opening bats; Cordelia and Paige, and also watching the Under 11 wicketkeeper Rebecca nearly standing up to the stumps to Cordelia, the Under 13 opening bowler!!

EWCA Chair, Matt Hyam, said that "the standard of the cricket played at this festival has got better year on year. The future looks bright for Essex with lots of talented players in all the age group teams."

The teams were coached and managed on the day by Chloe Elliot and Hannah Courtnell, along with the Essex Women and Girls Level 3 Coaches.

We’d like to thank everyone who assisted and took part in the event.

U11’s
Wins over two boys club teams
The U-11 Girls have played two warm up matches against Wickford CC and Harold Wood CC U-11 Boys teams. Both games were very competetive and provided excellent practice for the girls, some of whom are new to county cricket. The game against Wickford was won by 4 runs by the girls and they followed that up with a 2 run win over Harold Wood.

The U11 section has been training throughout the winter at New Hall School. They start their fixtures with two matches against Club boys’ teams on Sunday 20th and 27th April before they start their County matches. A squad has now been selected but new girls are always welcome to come along to the coaching sessions at New Hall School on a Wednesday evening.

U13’s
A full training programme has been put together by the coaches with this section for the coming season. A strong squad has been put together who should do well in the County Championship matches.

U15’s
Again a strong squad, the U15’s start their summer training at Garon Park on the 12th April. This squad has a very competitive group to play in this coming season but their management team expect them to perform well.

U17’s
This coming season sees the U17’s with the most fixtures that they have ever played in a season. The inclusion of two new squad members looks to strengthen the side this year.

Women
This section has, over the last couple of years, fielded young sides and they have now grown into a well balanced team; looking to win their respective league this year.

The Junior Super 4’s this season are being held at Billericay CC on Bank Holiday Monday 5th May. It is hoped that around 40 girls of school years 5, 6, 7 and 8 will play a “Round Robin” 4 team festival.

This year’s Lady Taverners U13 and U15 will be held at Harold Wood CC on Friday 30th May. Club teams will be invited to enter this competition which Harold Wood has won 3 times out of the last 4 seasons.

  Spirit of the Game

"Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within the Laws, but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to game itself."
