Under 13s win again against Middlesex

The U-13 Essex team continued their winning ways by beating local rivals Middlesex at Billericay Cricket Club on Sunday 17th July.

Middlesex won the toss and put Essex into bat on what looked like a perfect batting wicket. The Essex openers took full advantage of the playing conditions and proceeded to put on a significant opening stand of 150 runs in 22 overs, with a magnificent display of batting, which included some excellent stroke-play, from both players. The heat took its toll on both players with Beth MacGregor being caught behind the wicket for a magnificent 84 in the 23rd over and Lauren Onojaife finally ending her occupation of the crease in the 28th over being bowled for 73 runs. Beth Langston and Catherine Dalton completed the allotted 30 overs with Essex’s final score a very respectable and hard to beat target of 196 for 2 wickets.

Middlesex were quickly on the back foot with Catherine Dalton taking a wicket in her second over although Middlesex’s next 3 batters batted sensibly and took advantage of some early and rare fielding errors from the Essex side to make 59 from the first 10 overs. Essex tightening up its bowling and fielding and Tia Moore took a wicket shortly after drinks. Middlesex managed to bat sensibly on this batters paradise although never looked like reaching the substantial Essex total. Essex restricted Middlesex to 155 for 4 wickets off its allotted 30 overs. Catherine Dalton was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 22 from her 4 overs.

Essex U11 v Kent U11
Sunday 17th July 2005 Wye Cricket Club Kent

Essex girls had the long journey into the heart of the |Kent country side for the return match against Kent. After the previous weeks heavy defeat against Sussex the girls went into the match determined to put up a good performance.

Essex lost the toss and Kent elected to bat first. Essex started well with two quick run out, but as the match went on Essex tired in the heat, the bowling became a little ragged and the fielding lost its earlier spark. Kent ended their innings on 116 for 6 from their allotted 25 overs.

In reply Essex started slowly losing a wicket in the eight over one more wicket fell soon after but the Essex captain held her side together until she had to retire at a very tense part of the game as Essex were getting close to the Kent score. The lose of this influential batter slowed the Essex scoring down a little for a couple of overs and the Essex girls seemed to loose their way but some hard hitting in the 21st to the 23rd overs brought Essex back into the match. With the final over Essex needed 7 runs to win with the Kent opening bowler back on. Essex managed to scramble 3 runs during the first 5 balls leaving themselves 4 to win off the last ball. The girls unfortunately could not quite do it scoring 2 runs and therefore loosing the match by just 1 run.

A great improvement on last weeks batting performance.
