Fundamental Movement Skills Programme

Week Three

Warm up

Running with a Cricket Bat
Shuttle running with a cricket bat. Split pupils into groups of four, shuttle running one at a time to three designated points, returning each time to their home base. Includes, running, balance, rotating. Theory work can be done here with the batting crease.

Main Theme
Striking
(Co-ordination, balance and timing) E.g., balls taps on bat, bounce on floor then bat, taps top, bottom, middle, in pairs. Pupils are taught to hold the bat, their stance and pick up. This will encourage good balance and posture. The group is the split into groups of three (a wicket keeper, a bowler and a batter!). With the aid of a cone the batters are then coached to play a straight drive off of the cone.

Game Activity
Striking a moving ball, running with decision-making
Group split into two, one fielding one batting. Two designated areas for fielders. Coach feeds, if the ball is fielded in the first area fielders are encouraged to underarm the return, if fielded in the second area the fielders are encouraged to over arm throw their return. The batter, on hitting the ball decides on whether to run to point one or two.

Comments
This session incorporates a lot of decision making by all participants.

  Spirit of the Game

"Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within the Laws, but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to game itself."
