Essex Cricket 2009 Schools Legacy Project.
With both the Men’s and Women’s T20 Cricket World Cups being held in England this year Essex Cricket decided to involve primary schools in a cricketing legacy project. Schools throughout Essex were given the opportunity to enter this project. Schools that entered were given a Country and asked to complete a study of that Country, generally and with cricket in mind. The prize for the best projects was a day at Chelmsford during the England Women’s game against Australia, to assist with the Guard of Honour, play a Kwik Cricket match during the interval and be photographed with both of the Women’s World Cups.
The four finalists in the project were Merrylands from Laindon, Buttsbury from Billericay, Downham Primary from Ramsden Heath and Stock Primary.
Buttsbury, Merrylands and Stock came to the International match with Collingwood School from South Woodham Ferrers taking Downham’s place.
The girls in each team thoroughly enjoyed their day at The Ford County Ground playing cricket, being part of the guard of honour, touching the Women’s World Cups and talking with both the England and Australian Women players.

Daily Mail visits Essex U17 squad at Lord’s
Daily Mail reporter Laura Williams joined the England Women’s coach Mark Lane and Essex U17 squad for training at Lords. While interviewing Lane about the World Cup win and the forthcoming T20 world cup and Ashes tour, Williams talked to the Essex squad about the inspiration which a successful national side gives them. See excerpt below:
‘…I was outclassed by Essex Under 17 Girls in the Indoor School at Lord's.
'You did well,' said former Cambridgeshire and Derbyshire all-rounder Frank Griffith, 41, who was watching his daughter, 13-year-old Cordelia.
'The only thing was you always picked the ball up with one hand, and it would probably would have bobbled a bit if you had been outside.'
Good thinking, Frank. Cordelia, a bowling all-rounder from Chigwell, Essex, is one of the thousands of girls who have taken up the sport.
She has her dad to thank for the weekends legging it across the country with Essex Under 13s (and her mum, Cheryl, 37, for helping her get there), but many others have been inspired by the achievements of [Charlotte] Edwards [England women’s captain] and her team.
Essex's Laura Owen, 17, admitted her mates now have an inkling as to how she spends her weekends and Sky Sports ECB Coach Education Programme recently announced a 49 percent increase in participation.’

North Essex Girls victory at Essex District Girls Cricket Festival |
The lovely setting of Holmwood House Prep School Nr Colchester was the venue for the inaugural Essex District Girls Cricket Festival on Sunday 14th June .
Earlier in the year the Essex Women’s Cricket Association had obtained funding which enabled them to fund girl’s cricket coaching sessions and coaching camps in each of the Five District Board areas. From these sessions District Boards were able to select a side to represent them at this festival. Four boards were represented, North, South West and Central, only the Metropolitan Board were not represented.
The teams played a round robin, 12 overs a side and at the end of the days play the North Essex District Board were the festival winners.
The day was a great advert for where Essex Girl’s cricket is in 2009 and thanks were expressed to the coaches and managers of all teams involved and to Clive Early from Holmwood House School for hosting the festival.
